Here is my take on the latest release from the local band Black Tie.

Black Tie
Goodbye, Farewell (Socyermom)

The use of cello in genres like punk rock often indicates that a band has completely sold its soul but, for indie experimental outfit Black Tie, the instrument perfectly complements the mood of foreboding calm already put in place by the churning sea of pointed piano and keyboard, chimey guitars and breathy, soft-spoken vocals. The mostly instrumental LP features guest appearances by a great many local musicians including Ryan Anthony (Jason and the Argonauts) Sean McCullough (Oktober People, Lowlights) and Ryan Martino (Of God and Science) who seem to revel in the record’s loose, unencumbered environment.
