Sol Arts’ production of Richard Dresser’s Below the Belt is only running one more weekend. This one’s been flying below the radar for a lot of local theater goers, but it’s worthwhile viewing if only for a truly remarkable performance by John Wylie as Hannahan, a disgruntled, bitter employee at a Kafkaesque corporate compound located in the middle of nowhere. Hannahan reminded me a lot of our systems administrator, Kyle—equal parts grouchiness and nihilistic charisma. Sometimes you want to slap him. Sometimes you want to put his face on a T-shirt and start a cult of personality in his honor.Directed by Clareann Despain, the play also stars Andrew Leith as Hannahan’s pansy roommate, Dobbitt, and John Hardman as their boss, Merkin. Dresser’s script is frequently very funny, in a bleak, I-hate-my-shitty-job kind of way. Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20, at 8 p.m. Sunday at 2 p.m. $10 general, $8 students/seniors. Sol Arts is located at 712 Central SW. 244-0049.
