Catch the Bird! (MRCOG)

Here’s some news hot off the e-presses: Looks like our lovely, feathered commuter rail just got lovelier. A press release from the Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) in my inbox this morning says the Rail Runner is going to start using biodiesel–a goal that’s been in the "wings" (I can’t help myself) for some time. Augusta Meyers, MRCOG spokesperson, says the change is going to take effect immediately. Although she couldn’t say at the time exactly where the Rail Runner’s going to be getting its eco-friendly fuel, she says it is coming from somewhere in the Southwest.

In case you’ve never heard of biodiesel, it’s made from the vegetable waste of farm products, is cleaner burning and is 20 percent less expensive than regular diesel fuel (which adds up to about 30 cents a gallon cheaper). The Rail Runner will be one of the first commuter rail systems in the country to use biodiesel. I’d like to personally give a big pat on the back to all the folks involved in this project. Here’s to a better tomorrow.
