Robert Fulford of the National Post is claiming lowbrow cinema has become the only brow in town. A film’s success, he says, is based largely on how well it sells and not necessarily on its artistic merits.Now I’m as annoyed as the next guy when I have to watch a pod-racing sequence that lasts 45 minutes just so George Lucas can sell me a video game, but I’m not sure things have completely gone to shit. Last year, Hollywood squeezed out two of the best films I’ve seen in a very long time, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood . I don’t know if those movies live up to the traditional standards Fulford speaks of, but they can certainly be defended on artistic as well as technical grounds. All hope is not lost.
