Espertantina, a small town situated in conservative Northeastern Brazil, celebrated its first official Orgasm Day on Monday, May 9, 2005. Residents of Espertantina have been celebrating the holiday unofficially since 2001. Former Espertantina Mayor, Jose Inaldo Franco, was opposed to declaring an official Orgasm Day and vetoed a bill passed by the City Council in 2001. The puritanical politico was quoted in the Jornal do Brasil in November 2001 regarding the City Council’s Orgasm Day initiative: “I am ashamed of this pornographic projectâ€.
On Monday, current Espertantina Mayor, Felipe Santolia, said he would sign the holiday-creating bill. Santolia told Terra Noticias Populares: “I think that the orgasm issue is a very important and modern one.” Espertantina’s Orgasm Day was originally the idea of Councilor Arimateia Dantas. Dantas allegedly undertook a survey of sexually active Brazilian woman and found that only 28% enjoyed orgasms every time they have sex.
