Accurate or no, it’s pretty widely held that President Bush was elected the second time in part by Christians against gay marriage. It’s easy to forget about the lefty Christians, given today’s fear of Republican-fueled megachurches, political forces that they are. (See also: The scary revivalist church scene in Borat. I’m having a hard time recalling the political statements exactly. The church bit follows the naked hairy wrestling bit, at which point my brain shut down in self-defense).

Anyway, here’s a heartening article about a preacher asking: Would Jesus shop at Wal-Mart? With its violation of child labor laws, gender-based discrimination and lack of adequate health care coverage, the answer seems to be no. A letter signed by 130 clergy members asks Wal-Mart to provide better conditions for workers and their families, because it would reflect “the best of Christian values.”

See. I knew there had to be a way to mobilize Christian values that would support loving thy neighbor and all that business.
