Dog Substitute And A Gardening Hotline

I was born into a house with two dogs. They were big, monstrous, fluffy things, with perky ears and curly tails, and three layers of black-, white- and charcoal-colored fur. They were named after Norse gods. I used to pretend they were dragons. We took naps.

And so, like many children that came before me and many that will come after, I developed a deep love for dogs. And throughout my entire childhood, up until I graduated from high school, the furry beasts were always around.

But now, unfortunately, it’s been years since I’ve had a dog in the house. I have all the right excuses—no yard, I’m single, I’m not home enough, blah, blah, blah. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I may not have a dog for a few more years, or until I finally decide to buy a house, but it doesn’t keep me from missing them. Lucky for me, I’ve been able to substitute my addiction for another: plants.

My house is filled with them, and every summer, I go on a flower frenzy. You see, I may not have a yard, but I do have a little patio, and on it room for a few large barrels and pots of geraniums, pansies, cosmos and whatever else my heart desires. And, now that it’s spring, it’s the perfect time to empty my wallet at the local nursery.

Chris Johnson already wrote a thorough blog below [“Make It Purdy” http://alibi.com/index.php?story=14727&fullstory=y] on resources for folks looking to beautify their gardens, but here’s an additional resource for those who are sans a green thumb: The Albuquerque Area Extension Master Gardener Hotline is officially back up and running and will be active until October 31. Master Gardeners will be available to answer all of your gardening questions from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., seven days a week. Give ’em a call at 292-7144 or check out their website http://www.abqmastergardeners.org.
