Partying Hard With Rap And The Booty Green

If you’re itchin’ to dance, down to get down and jonesing for novelty drinks, the place to be is Burt’s Tiki Lounge tonight for their annual Mardi Gras celebration. Members of two of the evening’s local electronically inclined headliners (The Booty Green and Rap) were nice enough to tell us all about alcohol’s integral role in song writing, fond memories of inhaling lighter fluid and everyone’s secret obsession with Duran Duran.

Alibi: What are the key ingredients to a good Rap/Booty Green song?

Mark Camtagna of the Booty Green: I usually start with ’80s beats from Madonna or Prince, for example, and then I start layering on other pop elements. Basically it’s putting pop music on top of ’80s beats.

Hari Ziznewski of Rap: A lot of what’s in our songs comes from our jam session where me and Brandon (Bethancourt) get really drunk and just go on for a really long time. The next day we’ll sort of take bits and pieces from those long jams and happenstancially come up with the rest of the song. It also depends on the song whether we want to make our beats using computer software or cut together Casio beats for a more lo-fi sound.

Are there any juicy stories from Mardi Gras past?

Mark: I’m afraid that’s classified information.

Hari: Well, let’s see, last year at Burt’s I got this big-ass volcano drink and in the middle there was something flammable that you were supposed to light on fire but I ended up drinking that part of the drink with the rest. That was pretty memorable. We’ll see what happens this year.

Is there anything in particular that party attendees should be aware of?

Mark: Everyone is welcome on the stage, especially if they have costumes or exotic jewelry. Also, it’s OK to admit that Duran Duran is one of the greatest bands in the world. People have a hard time with that and I don’t think they should.

Hari: If you really believe, deep down in your heart, that you want to party, then you don’t even know how hard you’re capable of partying until you party with us. Get ready because ninja stars are going to shoot out of your love-soul once that music starts to play!
