Here at Richard Romero’s brick Barelas home, the party is lively and he’s telling everyone to make themselves comfortable. It smells like chile and cheese, and there’s cake on the kitchen counter. Kids and a large tan dog are underfoot. Family, friends and supporters walk up to shake his hand. But Romero’s watching the results scroll across the bottom of the television. With 40 percent of precincts reporting, he’s in third place with 26 percent of the vote. R.J. Berry has taken a substantial lead with more than 40 percent of the vote. The look on Romero’s face is pensive. He says it’s no consolation that Chavez isn’t winning. “I sure wish we were in the lead.”
