There’s a functional kitchen behind that plastic.

You can still get gas there, but you can’t get *gas* – at least not the sweet gas associated with La Hacienda’s famous bean and chicharone burrito. La Hacienda Express is still thriving in several Albuquerque locations, but the one inside the Giant Station at San Mateo and I-40 is no more. Outside, the colorful signs have been ripped from the building in lieu a flapping banner heralding the arrival of Villalobos Foods. Inside, the once cheerful kitchen is concealed behind a shroud of black plastic, while the counter is littered with an array of food dispensing devices. This is Villalobos Foods: not so much a restaurant as a hodge podge of food-warming robots and cheese dispensers. Workers at the Giant station confided that La Hacienda just wasn’t making enough money to stay open. Well, that’s certainly not my fault. RIP, scary little taco stand.
