Goodbye, Miss Moneypenny

It’s strange to think that my family owned a coat rack when I was growing up because a coat rack is such a strange thing to own. It’s not like we always had it, either, but I’ll be damned if I can recall what circumstances could have caused my parents to purchase or otherwise aquire it.

My brother and I would play a James Bond game with the coat rack. Over and over again, we’d walk out of the kitchen wearing one of my dad’s hats, say “Hello, Miss Moneypenny” with a British accent then spin the hat at the coat rack like a frisbee, trying to make it hang on top. Just like Bond, except our success rate was considerably lower – it’s harder than it looks.

I always thought Moneypenny was a handsome enough woman – not a Bond Girl by usual standards but handsome enough just the same, and she gave great personality.

And now she’s gone. Actress Lois Maxwell, who played Moneypenny in 14 Bond movies, passed away on Saturday at the age of 80. Rest in peace, scary little secretary.
