Hail! Hail! Rock ’N’ Roll!

The hail that pelted us wasn’t quite this large.

So, one minute it’s a sunny 85 degrees and I’m swimming in a cool dark pool on the east fork of the Jemez River. Five minutes later, the sky is gray, and I feel a couple drops of rain, so I dry myself off and get dressed, and we prepare to head back to the car. Five minutes after that, we’re huddled under a narrow rock shelf with the dogs getting pelted with sheets of nickel-sized hail while bolts of lightning are cracking through the air above us. The moral of this story? The weather changes fast in New Mexico. Back in the car, we noticed that the temperature had dropped to 40 degrees. We felt lucky to get out alive.
