Hooray For New Jersey!

Yesterday, New Jersey’s Supreme Court ruled that gay couples deserve the same rights as heterosexual couples. The justices gave Congressfolk six months to come up with a bill offering those rights to gay couples, though there’s no word yet on whether it would be in the form of marriage or civil unions.

The high court’s chief justice, the first woman in the state to hold the title, retired after the ruling, capping her career with an exclamation point on her commitment to social justice. What we name things, she notes, is important. Still, this argument is not new in New Jersey or across the country.

Of course, Brad Pitt might not have to bite the bullet and marry old Angelina yet. (He said a while back that he wouldn’t tie the knot until everyone could, a not-so-subtle allusion to unequal marriage rights in this country). Republicans are grumpy about the ruling . Some are calling to amend New Jersey’s constitution to ban same-sex marriage. No surprise there. I wonder though if they will use the New Jersey case as a punching bag as they stump for office.
