New York Times op-ed contributor, Steven Thrasher writes about his parents interracial marriage in 1958. They were wed in Council Bluffs, Iowa where, as of last week, gay couples can now marry.

The "food capital of the world" now allows gay marriages. That makes Iowa more progressive, when it comes to civil rights, than California or New York, two states commonly associated with liberal values. Thrasher writes: "when the time comes, I hope to be married at the City Hall in Council Bluffs, in the state that not only supports my civil rights now, but which supported my parents’ so many years ago."
