"The little death": It is the euphemism for a bribe in Mexico. We were introduced to La Mordita last week when my wife and I were in a two-car collision north of San Migeuel de Allende. To everyone’s dismay, a Federale appeared on scene, with gun holster unsnapped, sunglasses shining like black mirrors and name tag removed. He shook us and the Mexican driver down for a $300 bribe–excuse me, "penalty"–which he promised to deliver to the magistrate the next day. It was either pay up or both cars would be impounded as "evidence" and both drivers hauled off to jail since everyone is guilty until proven innocent and it is "against the law to have an accident" in Mexico.

Has anyone else ever been forced to pay a bribe to Mexican police?
