Local artist and ad-maker Lonnie Anderson has been outdoing himself for Valentine’s Day year after year. Just ask his partner of 15 years (wife for 10 of those) Anne Bolger-Witherspoon.

He’s set up a carousel in their front yard. He’s installed a giant game board in her apartment. He’s drawn her name in chalk hearts all over New York City. Read all about it in
this week’s news feature.

He didn’t want to spoil the surprise, so during the interview, he asked me not to reveal his 2010 plans. But he sent me an update after the festivities were over.

This year, Anderson put together a Valentine’s Day prom. He secured a gym and decorated it in retro-style, disco ball included. The couple dressed in ’80s prom gear and danced the night away. He played records on an old stereo and set up an area for prom photos. Anderson also made his wife a mixed tape, which he says was a challenge in this era of MP3s and live-streams.
