DITCH & WATER SAFETY TASK FORCE MEDIA ADVISORY & PHOTO OP WHO: Ditch & Water Safety Task Force (Ditches Are Deadly Campaign) WHAT: News conference and mock drowning to remind people to stay out of area ditches and arroyos as the 2009 irrigation season beginsWHEN: Thursday, March 5th at 10:00 a.m. WHERE: The Angostura Dam in Algodones (directions below) WHY: To increase public awareness about the hazards associated with ditches and arroyos. This year has the potential to be particularly dangerous due to high snow falls and expected heavy run offsVISUALS: Algodones Elementary School students watching a mock drowning using a rescue dummy; The Angostura Dam shows the power of the water; the Hovercraft, one of the only safety vehicles to be used in rescues; and Ditch and Water Safety Task Force personnelDirections to Angostura Dam: Take I-25 north, exit at the Rio Rancho/Placitas exit #242 onto route 550, go west. At the first major intersection, SR 313 (also marked Camino del Pueblo) go north (turn right) you will pass the Bernalillo High School on your left and a large factory a bit further down. You will go through the Santa Ana Reservation, passing the pueblo. 1 mile past the end of the Santa Ana Reservation and 4.7 miles from the intersection in Bernalillo, there is mile marker 13. You will have just crossed a dry arroyo and small bridge. There is a dirt road on your left, which will take you to the Angostura Arroyo maintenance road ditch and the dam. Turn west (left) on the maintenance road and you will be lead to the news conference site. (Please note: If you reach the town of Algodones you have gone too far.)
