It appears there aren’t enough votes in the Senate to pass a bill that would create a government-funded public health system. A compromise, formulated by Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad, would set up non-profit coops that would compete with the for-profit private sector health care system. According to the Washington Post , the coops would be free from much of the baggage of government control.It would be nice if national health care were a given in this country, but we’re clearly not at that point. If there can be some sort of alternative to the money-leaching profit-hungry health care system we currently have, that would be a treat.
