::Making Grown Men Cry Since 1992

I have been put in charge of the planning for a project, in particular, the ordering of materials for it. Now it is foreman’s job to implement it. He is upset that he was not informed earlier of the plans. He weeps silently. I take full responsibility and apologize to him. He tells me I failed to order enough cinder blocks. His large crew jumps into action. They are all highly disciplined, motivated and loyal. I work alongside them and worry that I have no gloves. The foreman barks out military style orders ("front and center!"). Fourteen men line up with turning cement mixers. I pocket 2 tiny pencil stubs. I smooth the grass on the top of our constructed water catchment and step back. Workers have already lined it with black plastic and red Indian corn. They begin filling it with water. A woman thanks the foreman for putting her on a crew with her best friend. The purpose of the entire project has been to coax a crazy man out of the woods. He rustles in the trees and runs up onto the dam. He looks me in the eye and asks ‘What’s this all about?’ I explain that we have built a nice place for him, and that we’ll see what happens next.
