A red phone booth stands on a downtown sidewalk. Open the plexiglass door and lift the receiver of the retro, push-button phone. Dial the number stenciled on the booth’s interior: 346-0660 x. 123. Spill your guts—your rants, thoughts, dreams. Artist Bethany Delahunt is listening, and the messages collected from this public art installation will appear in the Alibi. Hang up and grab a copy of the paper from the lower half of the phone booth—which had its humble beginnings as a beat-up blue distro box. Delahunt is one of 14 artists who took up the challenge to remake the Alibi’s metal stands. Scores of submissions came in from Albuquerque’s top artists. Arts Editor Summer Olsson and Circulation Manager Geoff Plant sifted through the renderings, letters, drawings, blueprints and portfolios to choose the best designs. Plant delivered out-of-commission boxes to the winners. Three weeks later, the beauties came rolling back in, ready to be deployed along Albuquerque’s main corridor.The 14 art boxes are the subject of this week’s feature.
