The great playwright, poet and drinker Brendan Behan once quipped, “It’s not that the Irish are cynical. It’s rather that they have a wonderful lack of respect for everything and everybody.” Behan was one of the more lauded Irish playwrights (and characters) of his time—a quality shared by contemporaries of his like Martin McDonagh and Conor McPherson, also known for their biting wit. They’re just two of the playwrights being showcased in the inaugural Southwest Irish Theater Festival. McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan , directed by Marty Epstein, plays tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Vortex (2004 1/2 Central SE). See the above link for more details and showtimes.
