From the very beginning of the year, the Boston Celtics were doubted. Critics thought their defense and bench would be their Achilles heals. Fast-forward to the present. The Celtics are up two games to none against the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals.

The Celtic’s defense was the best in the league during the regular season, and has held Lakers’ star Kobe Bryant to two sub-par offensive performances. The Celtics bench has outperformed their Lakers counterparts, even though it’s the Lakers reserves who have been praised all year. Bryant has earned a reputation as one of the league’s most clutch players. But it was the Celtics’ Paul Pierce who came through at the end of game two, sinking a couple key free throws after the Lakers had whittled down Boston’s 24-point lead to two.

The series is a long way from over, and the Celtics have looked much more vulnerable away from their home court. Boston is firmly in control though, and can squeeze the confidence out of the Lakers with a win in L.A. on Tuesday.
