Baseball Hits the Midway Mark We’re about halfway through the Major League Baseball season, and I can discern one noteworthy trend. In a couple of cases, losers are winning.Let’s start in the National League where the perennial lovable losers, the Chicago Cubs, have the best record in baseball. They started out hot, and they haven’t cooled down much since. At 48-28, the Cubs are a full four-and-a-half games ahead of the second place St. Louis Cardinals in the Central Division. The Alibi’s resident Cubs fan has expressed cautious optimism about Chicago’s new role as the league’s top team. The Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908, and their fans have to be praying for the postseason to come ASAP. In the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays, who have a team payroll that’s just a shade above what the New York Yankees pay Alex Rodriguez, are in sole possession of the Wild Card. The Rays are also just one game behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the East Division. Since their inception in 1998, the Rays have never been to the playoffs, and they’ve finished in last place in their division in every year except one. Go Yankees!
