Lobos Fall

They almost pulled off a major upset, but when it was all said and done, the Lady Lobos fell 60-61 against West Virginia, the No. 17 ranked team in the country. Nearly 10,000 fans brought the adrenaline level in the Pit to a boiling point over the game’s final 4.9 seconds, but Lobo seniors Brandi Kimble and Dionne Marsh missed open looks to close the game, which ended the Lobos’ season and the UNM careers of Kimble and Marsh. The game was an impressive closing act to a season with long stretches of disappointing play.

The Lobo men’s team lost their opening round game in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) to Cal, 68-66.

Other NCAA Tournament What Not

The first weekend of the NCAA Tournament saw some pretty big upsets including surprise second round exits by Georgetown and Duke. Two twelve seeds, Villanova and Western Kentucky advanced to the sweet 16 as did all four of the tournament’s one-seeds. Sweet 16 action starts Thursday, March 27.

Dirk Goes Down

Dirk Nowitzki of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks is out indefinitely with a high ankle sprain and mildly sprained knee. Nowitzki’s injury happened Sunday during the Mavericks’ loss to the San Antonio Spurs. With twelve games left, Dallas has to regroup in a hurry if they want to make the playoffs, because the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors are breathing down their necks for the final two playoff spots. Since trading for all-star guard Jason Kidd, the Mavs have not beaten a team with a winning record.

Baseball’s First Pitch

Opening day of the 2008 Major League Baseball season kicks off tomorrow in Tokyo. The Boston Red Sox will face the Oakland A’s in the Tokyo Dome as part of Major League baseball’s admiral attempt to bring MLB action to other parts of the globe. The first game played on American soil is Sunday, March 30, between the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals in D.C. Go Yankees!
