Hearken, my fellow linguaphiles (you know who you are), I have a special treat for you. Behold, 10 intriguing words—intended to scintillate, captivate and just make you smile.

1. hobbledehoy: an awkward, gawky young fellow

2. gyrovague—a monk who travels from one place to another

3. gegenschein—a faint oval patch of light directly opposite the sun in the night sky, caused by reflection of sunlight by dust particles; also known as “counterglow”

4. tokology—midwifery or obstetrics (not what you thought, huh?)

5. schmendrik—a foolish, clueless, and naive person

6. fussbudget—one who is fussy about unimportant things

7. mogigraphia—writer's cramp

8. sprachgefuhl—a feeling for language or a sensitivity for what is correct language

9. weltschmerz—world weariness; pessimism, apathy or sadness felt at the difference between physical reality and the ideal state

10. mulligrubs—grumpiness; colic; low spirits; an ill-tempered person.

And in that line of thought, I'll grant you with one bonus word, which is perhaps my favorite.

11. gumpwedge—a good friend informs me this is Maine slang for someone who's being “grumpy and pissy;” as in, “why are you being such a gumpwedge?” excellent.
