This year’s winner for the vaunted category of Best Huevos Rancheros goes to The Shop Breakfast and Lunch, a small, out of the way eatery near the university that features delicacies like duck confit, a carne adovada sandwich and, of course, the award-winning huevos plate, which in this case is topped with red chile and tomatillo salsa and is otherwise made with blue corn tortillas, organic black beans and queso fresco for a taste that is unique as any breakfast you can get in Burque. Ask for yours with beef chorizo for an extra fun (and pleasingly hot) morning meal. (SC)

3) Cocina Azul

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Breakfast Burrito

Maybe eaten more than any other singular food item in the 505, Golden Pride’s selection of breakfast burritos is just unbeatable. In a hurry? Need a vegetarian option? They’ve got you covered. This place runs like a well-oiled burrito machine, pumping out the hand-held goodness in mere minutes. Try a #2 with eggs, hash browns, carne adovada and cheese as a personal recommendation or go tortilla-less with a hash brown bowl. There’s really no way to lose here. (MF)

2) Blake’s Lotaburger

3) The Shop Breakfast and Lunch

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Pancakes

Winter is on its way, y’all and a hearty stack of flapjacks, smothered in unsalted butter and real honest to goodness maple syrup—accompanied by at least four cups of Seattle’s Best Post Alley coffee, in our case—is a damn good way to start the day. Luckily you don’t have to make these griddle cakes at home. Check out the flava of pancakes at the Central Grill and Coffee House! The buttermilk pancakes there are, to paraphrase Frank Zappa, light and fluffy white, the finest in the town. And yes, they do come with maple syrup, so dig in, winter’s waiting. (AM)

2) The Shop Breakfast and Lunch

3) Weck’s

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Waffles

When Tia B’s La Waffleria opened in 2014, we almost certainly knew this category would never be the same. Tia B’s has won every year since and they’ve earned it. Throw those frozen waffles away, do yourself a favor and try Tia B’s if you haven’t yet. They have sweet waffles, savory waffles and endless topping/batter combos if you want to try your hand at waffle creation. Look. We’ve written about their waffles for four years. Just go try them, okay? (VS)

2) The Shop Breakfast and Lunch

3) Waffle House

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best French Toast

French toast is actually not a French invention. In fact, the first known recipe for this breakfast food dates back to the 4th or 5th century Roman Empire. And what do the French call this dish? Pain perdu, which translates to “lost bread.” Even though the French toast recipe has been around for thousands of years, not much has changed. All you need are three ingredients—eggs, milk and bread—to make this dish. The Shop uses fresh brioche for theirs, and top it with whipped butter, pastry cream, fresh berries and whipped cream. Yum! 2) Central Grill and Coffee House

3) Mannie’s Family Restaurant

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Eggs

Our readers are big fans of The Shop, voting them the best in several breakfast categories. Poached, fried, scrambled—however you like your eggs, The Shop serves them up right. Try their chorizo and egg torta for something on the Southwestern side, or go for their duck hash for a fancy take on a breakfast classic. The Shop also serves such classics like eggs Benedict, a breakfast burrito and a breakfast sandwich. (TG)

2) Weck’s

3) Flying Star Cafe

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Bacon

Wakey wakey eggs and bakey. The Range has been serving “ordinary food done well” since 1996, and that includes everyone’s breakfast staple, bacon. Whether served in a breakfast burrito, as a side with their famous blue corn pancakes or ordered by the strip (coming in either two or four pieces), there are plenty of ways to satisfy your salty, crispy bacon needs here. (TG)

3) Java Joe’s

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Healthy Breakfast

If you don’t have a hearty breakfast every dang morning, how do you expect to get through those meetings, that campaign, that savage football encounter or whatever else you may be doing out there in Burque today? Well, you do have a choice and if your choice is the strength and resolve that come from consuming 1,200 to 1,500 calories just after sunrise, then you can go ahead and head over to The Grove Cafe & Market, where breakfast is served all day! Try on the breakfast burrito or the steel cut oat bowl if your day needs a boost. They also have something called avocado toast, in case you want to know. (AM)

2) Flying Star Cafe

3) The Shop Breakfast and Lunch

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Coffee/Espresso

Satellite serves up your morning (or afternoon or nighttime) cup of joe at six different locations in Burque. Although most of these locations are in or around the UNM area (they know their audience), Satellite holds a special place in our readers’ hearts. Locally owned and operated (by the same people as Flying Star), Satellite takes their coffee business seriously—even roasting their own beans right here in town. If you’re in desperate need of caffeine, try their infamous Black Velvet. In need of a pick-me-up? Their blended frio drinks are creamy and refreshing. What are you waiting for? Go forth and caffeinate. (TG)

3) The Brew Coffee & Tea Cafe by Villa Myriam

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Tea

If you’ve only had store bought tea bags with a little teddy bear in pajamas sitting on a rocking chair on the box, it’s time you checked out New Mexico Tea Company. They have tea blends available in white, green, oolong, black, rooibos, herbal blends and many more. The knowledgeable staff will help you with any questions you might have, even if the question is “I don’t know what kind of tea I like.” If you sign up for their e-mail newsletter, you will also receive a monthly tea sample on any bulk loose leaf tea available online and in store. This is a great way to find a blend you really like without dishing out a bunch of cash to discover it. (VS)

3) Thai Cuisine II

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Brunch

Woke up too late for breakfast? Think it’s too early for a burger? We feel ya. Head on over to The Shop, Nob Hill’s best quirky-casual eatery. You can puzzle between chilaquiles and a croque madame or lemon cornmeal pancakes and the bacon mac and cheese. Our suggestion: Their duck hash (diced potato, duck confit, green chile, mushroom, onion, local greens, roasted garlic, two eggs and cheddar on a bed of red chile) walks the fine line between brekky and lunch. And yes, millennials, they have avocado toast! (D’OL)

2) Campo at Los Poblanos

3) Sister Bar

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Biscuits And Gravy

Fluffy homemade biscuits, sliced avocado, poached eggs, red chile, queso fresco and a generous drowning of chorizo gravy? Yup, it all checks out. Now, to destroy the evidence! (D’OL)

2) Range Cafe

3) Weck’s

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Chicken Fried Steak

Going to a restaurant just because they feature a dish called chicken fried steak ought to be a sin, but it isn’t. Why, sometimes there is nothing better than a piece of cow coated in batter, fried up and served with thick country gravy. That’s called living the good life. In fact, in this day and age, eaters should get all they can of the good life before Trump tempts the Chinese into cooking us all up for dinner with a 100 megaton fry pan. Anyway, if you’re in the mood, Burque’s 66 Diner has just what you’re looking for. The joint is decorated to look like the ’50s and their chicken fried steak is Texas-huge and handbreaded too. (AM)

2) Vic’s Daily Cafe

3) Vick’s Vittles

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Hash Browns/Homefries

A quintessential breakfast food is the potato. The starchy, fried goodness is the perfect complement to fluffy eggs and salty bacon. And the Frontier is where Burqueños flock to get their fix. Whether it’s after church or after a night out, the Frontier will always be waiting for you with their top-rated, golden hash browns. (TG)

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Breakfast For Dinner

This local take on traditional eggs Benedict has got two poached eggs, green chile turkey sausage, an English muffin and chorizo hollandaise. So, yeah, it’s some hearty, delicious stuff. But—and we hate to break it to you—the Range only serves breakfast until 3pm. But with something that good in store, why wait until 6pm for dinner? (D’OL)

2) Chicken & Waffles at Brixens

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2018 Best Hangover Cure

Sophia’s Place is something of a legend among Burqueños. First opened in 2002, chef Dennis Apodaca’s innovative New Mexican restaurant has changed locations and names several times. For a while, it was known as Ezra’s and was stuck inside a bowling alley. Most recently, it was called Eli’s Place and operated in the North Valley. Now, it’s returned as a hip little storefront inside the Silver Moon Lodge Apartments on Central Ave. So if you spent last night drinking too much Downtown, crawl over to Remixx and start your day with some smothered sunshine.
