Written, directed, filmed and edited by Chris Roybal, Descansos is a fine choice. The drama about love, loss and roadside shrines is made up of eight vignettes shot all the way across northern New Mexico. In addition to showcasing picturesque locations like Albuquerque, Taos and Chimayo, the film also shines a spotlight on more than 20 local up-and-coming actors and actresses.

The thing is, nobody’s actually seen any of this film yet—aside from the trailer and star Christian Bale’s much-publicized rant. As a result, it’s hard to say whether it’s actually the best film or TV show. But it’s certainly the biggest, what with its $200 million budget and all. Will it surpass James Cameron’s justifiably famous creations? We’ll find out when the film gets released on May 21.

A lot of good theater has graced Burque this past year, and even some great theater. You said the best, hands down, was The Vortex’s staging of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch , directed by Dean Eldon Squibb. Complete with a backing rock band, their presentation of the story of international should-be superstar Hedwig and her inch blew you away. Several members of the audience are still recovering. And none of you, obviously, have forgotten.

Albuquerque likes its dance on the risqué side, and Burlesque Noir has transformed nerds and the Wizard of Oz alike into striptease fodder. This year, the troupe gave the usually spandex-clad Batman the dance-and-disrobe treatment in BlockBUSTers , and crime-fighting superheroes (and villains) never moved so good.

Bob: Arts Best Art Gallery

New Mexico is rich with galleries. In fact, there are more galleries than head shops. Come to think of it, maybe our state’s artist population has something to do with the latter. Anyway, for the beautiful and the creative, 516 ARTS and Wooden Cow Gallery and Art Space are our winners.

2) Black Market Goods, 3) Weems Art Gallery

Bob: Arts Best Theater Space

There’s something to be said for a place with heritage. KiMo is just over 90 years old, and the history packed into this Downtown theater comes through in the Pueblo-deco accents. The supposedly haunted landmark gives its ghosts competition with hair-raising performances of music, opera, ballet and theater.

2) The Vortex Theatre, 3) Popejoy Hall

Bob: Arts Best Local Artist

This local filmmaker has turned out three flicks in three years, with screenings at the Santa Fe Film Festival and the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Keep an eye out for his latest, Descansos (also winner of Best Locally Produced Film or TV Show Shot in New Mexico Last Year), which you can buy at the website above.

Bob: Arts Best Local Author

It was a crisp autumn night on the mesa. A light wind scored the barren surface, and somewhere in the distance, a coyote lowed its plaintive howl. Oh, sorry. But your choice of Tony Hillerman as best local author rendered us, well, Hillermanesque. Our dear departed scribe wrote about New Mexico in a way that revealed his pure, unfettered love for our patch of crabgrass. He treated New Mexico, and especially its Native people, with the kind of respect and understanding we see all too rarely in literature. You get this, and you’ll miss him.

Bob: Arts Best Comedy Troupe

Making someone laugh is an impressive feat; making a room full of someones laugh is an accomplishment even more hard-won. The four members of The One Night Stanleys win their laughs, and they do it through improv teamwork. Here’s one for the fraternity of comedy!

2) The Pajama Men, 3) Blackout Theatre Improv

Bob: Arts Best Theater Troupe

Blackout Theatre was founded in 2007, but its twos are far from terrible. In a city full of exciting theater, Blackout took on everything from original sketch comedy to David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Oleanna and emerged victorious.
