Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best New Mexican Restaurant

Red, green, Christmas, huevos rancheros, carne adovada, chile con carne, enchilada, chile relleno, calabacitas and tostada may seem like jargon to out-of-towners but they are some of the first food words New Mexican children learn; another first thing we learn is that this is some of the best food around. From all around the state, people know these two restaurants and get equally excited at the possibility of dining at one or the other. Another thing New Mexican children learn is that when one sees either salsa, you know you’re in a safe place.

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Green Chile Cheeseburger

Formerly dubbed “The Best Green Chile Cheeseburger in the World” by National Geographic, we Burqueño’s know that still holds true. Spreading across the Southwest like a rumor of someone’s sexual prowess amongst college students, soon New Mexicans won’t ever have to go without our beloved cheeseburger anywhere in the nation, just keep an eye out for that tall red, white and blue display.

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Frito Pie

We’ve asked many people prior to the BOBR polls what their opinion on the best Frito pie in town is and boy, oh boy, did your neighbors have a lot to say about this fundamental Burqueño dish. There’s a major shift in the last year favoring Sister Bar’s Frito pies (amongst other things the way they’ve swept up votes). Maybe it has something to do with the housemade red chile, the Mexican crema or that it can be prepared for our vegan and vegetarian friends. Sister has been owning the Downtown food scene and it shows.

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Grilled Cheese

Burqueños are passionate about a few things in life: weed, Balloon Fiesta and grilled cheese sandwiches. Grilled cheese sandwiches so much so that y’all couldn’t decide on the best one in town! But then again, it’s hard to fuck up a grilled cheese.

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Green Chile

green chile
C-h-i-l-e, you are super yummy, ch-chile, yeah, yeah. Yeah, ch-chile! New Mexicans go alllll crazy for the local fare and economical booster, especially from this local establishment. The hub across from the university feeds residents and tourists alike and is what keeps folks coming back (if they manage to leave) for more. We’ve seen people put it on burgers, eggs, sandwiches, salads, hell, even on a sweet roll (ya nasties). We love us some Frontier green chile!

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Red Chile

red chile
Just what the doctor ordered: Red chile from Duran Central Pharmacy is the absolute best concerning congestion and flavor (not in that order, though). Curing people of their qualms, the mini-fortress between Old Town and Downtown has built its unquestionable reputation on medicine (aka chile) and it shows. Folks have it with everything: enchiladas, tamales, burritos, burgers, quesadillas and sandwiches. Nothing is off limits—nor should it be, for that matter. Pass the container of chile, please, we just want it straight.

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Carne Adovada

No one can fulfill their personal journey in Burque without having carne adovada from Frontier or Golden Pride. The soft, juicy, shredded meat make can make anyone into a hero. Have it in your burrito, eggs, tacos, whatever. Bring a whole bag of soft, warm carne adovada burritos as a gift anywhere, and people will never forget the person who made their day.

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Tortillas

It’s typical for a group of people to go into Frontier, order a bag of tortillas and chow down and chat for hours. Tearing the soft, flat bread apart, inhaling it and brushing the fine flour dust off the tips of one’s fingers while maintaining a conversation is an art. We have high expectations of this New Mexican institution, which they never fail. Out-of-towners, I hope you packed light because once you try these, you’ll try to bring the entire daily stock back home with you (or you could just stay and never worry about missing it ever again).

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Tamales

Alibi readers know that the only tamales better than their abuela’s are from El Modelo. Pork or chicken? Red or green? Either way, these tamales are a fan favorite and come in large portions that can be shared with the whole family. You don’t have to wait until the holidays to get your fix! We’re sure even all the abuelas in town would agree that El Modelo’s tamales are the best!

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Sopaipillas

Sopaipillas are one of a kind in the Land of Enchantment. They come in all shapes and sizes but at Sadie’s, they’re as fluffy as a cake and can be used for various eating methods. In to scraping up your leftovers to clear your plate? How about having them stuffed with your choice of bean, chicken carne adovada or beef brisket and topped smothered in chile? Or even substituting them as a dessert? Just pass the honey!

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Enchiladas

Los Cuates knows that when it comes to food, you need options. Especially when it comes to your enchiladas. From plain cheese to carnitas, chicken, ground beef, shredded beef and carne adovada, your taste buds can always try something new! And what are enchiladas if they’re not Christmas style? That’s why our readers want the rest of Burque to know that if you’re craving enchiladas but don’t want to cook, Los Cuates is where you need to be.

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Chips And Salsa

Sadie’s doesn’t just have the best sopaipillas in town, they also have the best chips and salsa—and for all the right reasons. Servers start you off with a basket of chips that have that freshly-made taste to them and a small bowl of salsa that can clear your sinuses in an instant. The free refills are addictive and keep you reaching back and forth in a cycle of chips, salsa, mouth. If you add a couple Margaritas to it, it’s a meal in itself!

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Burrito

You may snort derisively and say, “Isn’t this category redundant?” Sure, any burrito can be a breakfast burrito if you eat it in the AM (see “Morning Munchies”), but what if you eat said burrito in the PM? Well, it’s a whole different animal! So, Frontier edged the competition in the hotly contested "Best Burrito" category. Why? Because their burritos really are the best, silly. The burrito king of kings is their Frontier burrito with the stewed green chile, but then again, we never met a burrito of theirs that we didn’t like.

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Indian Taco

If you’ve never tried an authentic Indian taco, Pueblo Harvest Cafe is best for first-timers, or even those who’ve had them before. It’s hard to come across a restaurant that serves Indian tacos and in a large portions that can feed at least two people. Don’t care about not being able to finish it and want to be selfish and enjoy this savory meal on your own? We don’t blame you. Take the rest for later and relive that satisfying moment all over again!

Best Of Burque Restaurants 2016 Best Chile Cheese Fries

Our readers know that the ultimate New Mexican food experience is definitely the chile cheese fries from Bob’s Burgers. Why, you may ask? These fries are smothered in spicy green chile with a layer of sinfully gooey cheese. To eat these fries solely by themselves with no beverage to soothe your taste buds, is truly impressive.
