The summer months in Albuquerque are quite possibly the most miserable of the year. Yes, it's true that afternoon thunderstorms in July and August deliver a brief respite from the heat, but they never seem to last long enough to provide much relief.

If you really want to get your head out of the oven, you've got to get out of town. Thankfully, there are plenty of places relatively close by that are perfect for chillin'. What follows are a few of our suggestions. From the ice cave near El Malpais to the Valles Caldera to the tippy top of Wheeler Peak, we'll show you how to escape the summer heat in style. And for those of you who can't get the hell out of Dodge this summer, we've supplied a listing of pools open to the public. Hey, if that's the best you can do, that's the best you can do.
