Mayor Martin Chavez vetoed a bill allowing only three members of any single profession to serve on city boards and commissions on grounds that the city charter allowed him to nominate whomever he wanted. The veto stood unchallenged by councilors, allowing unlimited mayoral realtor and developer nominations, subject to council approval.
Eleven speakers protested shipments of nuclear waste through the Big I to the WIPP site near Carlsbad, as well as an amendment by Sen. Pete Domenici that banned testing of the waste. And the Casa San Ysidro museum received continued support.
