The Museum of Natural History & Science is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a year’s worth of special exhibits and events. They kicked off the festivities by announcing an affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, who helped bring the Post Diamond Tiara to New Mexico as a special exhibit at the museum (still running). The new partnership means we’ll be able to see some of the same exhibits seen in Washington D.C. The museum also recently celebrated the opening of the new STEM education wing, a task that has taken six years to see completion.But that’s just the appetizer. 2016 will be jam-packed with excitement. Top Secret: License to Spy, an interactive exhibition putting museum visitors into the role of crime-solvers, opens Feb. 6. March brings us a new DynaTheater program, Journey to Space, a celebration of space exploration. In April, Spencer Lucas, author of 30 years of Scientific Discoveries and Exhibits, conducts a book-signing. May’s Cinco de Dino Celebration will give us a chance to party like a dinosaur. A Nostalgic Look Back will be a tour through the wacky ’80s in June. July is shark month with the unveiling of The Buzz Saw Sharks of Long Ago, a funny art-and-science exhibit teaching us all about prehistoric sharks. August will debut Curator’s Choice: 30 Stories from our Collections. September will see some new interactive enhancements made to the permanent galleries. A focus on outreach happens in October, featuring the Sandia Mountain Nature Center. Phew! All in all, it’s looking like a busy year for the museum so start planning now.
