The much-loved In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was released in 1998 by Neutral Milk Hotel. One of its many fans is Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls. Seeking the purity of process at her old stomping grounds of Lexington High School, she contacted her former theatre mentor and proposed a musical based on album. Palmer crafted With the Needle that Sings in Her Heart with the drama students of Lexington High. It tells the tale of Anne Frank’s last months in a death camp as she journeys into escapist fantasies of circus. The production was filmed, and you can watch the whole thing here.
