Photo Contest ends. In the meantime ...
The window to submit photos for the eighth annual Alibi Photo Contest closes on Thursday, March 17, at 5 p.m. Thank you to everyone who sent in their pics—be sure to check out the March 31 issue of the Alibi to see who won. In the meantime, photo-buffs can hear a talk on Edwin Land by MIT’s Dr. Victor McElheny at the Albuquerque Museum (2000 Mountain NW) on Sunday, March 20, at 1 p.m. Land was a businessman, war contractor, follower of the arts and an inventor. He worked on early smart bombs and one of his inventions led to swirly lights inside jukeboxes. He also invented the Polaroid camera. They make everything look like it’s 1974. It is important to note that while Land invented the Polaroid, he wasn’t the one who instructed you to shake it like one. That was Outkast. The talk is in conjunction with the ongoing exhibit A Passionate Light: Polaroids by H. Joe Waldrum. For more information, go to cabq.gov/museum.
Writing seminar (with jokes)
There are at least two ways to be a funny writer. First one: Be a mentally unbalanced, miserable bastard. (Hello, there.) For some reason, jokes come from dark places in the mind. Of course, this method never ends well, usually on the memorial reel at the Academy Awards or the Emmys. If you want to come comedic, there is another way: Attend “The Other F Word—How to Write Funny” at the Hotel Andaluz (125 Second Street NW) on Saturday, March 19, starting at 2 p.m. Comedy writers Tracy Newman (“Ellen,” “The World According to Jim,” “Cheers”) and Cindy Caponera (“SNL,” Second City, “Shameless”) will be on hand for a panel discussion on the art and craft of writing comedy for television and film. The event costs $10. Stick around for Newman’s concert (she is also a folk musician) and discussion with the hosts of the radio show “Art of the Song” at 7 p.m. That one is $15. Be there, be funny.
