The Infoshop Around the Corner—Basement Films will be hosting an independent documentary tour this coming weekend. Living Room: Space and Place in Infoshop Culture by Liz Simmons and Courtney Kallas will screen on Friday, Feb. 24, at OffCenter Arts (Eighth Street and Central) beginning at 7 p.m. Simmons and Kallas, who will be on hand for the screening, spent the last two years completing this project. The film discusses, among other things, the fact that we live in a society where public places that people feel like they are an active part of and can use for noneconomic purposes are increasingly rare. “Infoshops” are community spaces that facilitate access to traditionally marginalized information while providing a physical space for people to build creative projects. Simmons and Kallas are kicking off their three-month, 50-city tour right here in Albuquerque, so please show up to lend a little support. Big in Bangkok—The locally produced, low-budget horror film The Stink of Flesh has apparently garnered itself an international fanbase. A loyal customer of Burning Paradise Video (whose owner, Kurly Tlapoyawa, stars in Stink) recently stumbled across the film in Thailand, where it was playing on a triple-feature with King Kong and Memoirs of a Geisha. After wandering into the theater to confirm that it was, in fact, writer/director Scott Phillips' homegrown zombie fest, the customer hunted down one of Thailand's plentiful bootleg DVD dealers. A copy of The Stink of Flesh was quickly procured and brought back here to Albuquerque. The garish DVD cover (with artwork “borrowed” from several other unknown films) is relatively accurate (unlike most Asian bootlegs) and excitingly bills the film as “The America Most Horror Movie of Year 2005!” The stars of Stink are correctly listed on the cover (although their résumés are padded out with fake credits–William Garberina is now the star of Cop in City). The only disappointing part is that my name has been removed from the cast list and replaced with that of “Colm Feore.” … Speaking of which, where are my royalty checks from Iron Eagle II?
