Awesome independent movie rental shop Burning Paradise Video recently relocated from its Downtown Albuquerque location to the Bricklight District across from UNM. To celebrate the brand-new store (located at 115 Harvard SE, Suite 2), Burning Paradise is having a rockin’ grand opening celebration on Friday, Jan. 28. In addition to a 15 percent discount on in-store purchases all day long, free food and drinks will be served at 5 p.m., then Vertigo Venus and Dead On Point Five make with the live music. As if that weren’t enough, the store will hand out super-cool movie-related door prizes all night. To qualify for the swag, just take a photo of yourself standing next to BP’s sidewalk zombie and upload it to the store’s fan page on Facebook.

Reel World: Cinema Justice Cinema Justice

Every Monday evening at 7 p.m., Jan. 24 through May 16, the People Before Profit Film Series is happening at UNM’s SUB Theater. The event is cosponsored by UNM’s Peace Studies Department and a student organization known as S.O.A.P. (Students Organizing Actions for Peace). Each week will feature a different documentary on topics related to social justice (workers rights, water concerns, food security, education problems, etc.). Titles include Religulous, The Future of Food, The Corporation and Salt of the Sea . The People Before Profit series has run for the past several years at the Albuquerque Center for Peace & Justice, but was originally a student-led project, and organizers are happy to see it return to student hands. All screenings are free and open to the public, although donations are encouraged.

Reel World: Awards That Blow Awards That Blow

On Monday, Jan. 24, the venerable Razzies organization announced the nominees for the 31 st Annual Golden Raspberry Awards. Among the Worst Picture nominees is a veritable cornucopia of crumminess with The Bounty Hunter , The Last Airbender , Sex and the City 2 , Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Vampires Suck . (Four of those five made my “10 Worst” list.) Worst Actor nominees: Jack Black ( Gulliver’s Travels ), Gerard Butler ( The Bounty Hunter ), Ashton Kutcher ( Killers and Valentine’s Day ), Taylor Lautner ( Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Valentine’s Day ) and Robert Pattinson ( Remember Me and Twilight Saga: Eclipse ). Worst Actress is a five-way fight between Jennifer Aniston ( The Bounty Hunter and The Switch ), Miley Cyrus ( The Last Song ), Megan Fox ( Jonah Hex ), Kristen Stewart ( Twilight Saga: Eclipse ) and all four lead leads from Sex and the City 2 . There’s a new category this year: Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3D. It could go to Cats & Dogs 2: Revenge of Kitty Galore , Clash of the Titans , The Last Airbender , Nutcracker 3D or Saw 3D . Me, I gotta root for that heinous crap Clash of the Titans tried to pull. “Winners” will be announced Feb. 26—the night before the Academy Awards.
