Chicano Visions

New Visions / New Mexico Contract Award-winning filmmaker Federico Reade and community activist Richard Moore (founding member of the Black Beret organization) will discuss their documentary-in-progress American Blowback: New Mexico’s Black Berets on Thursday, May 5. The presentation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at Los Jardines Community Space (803 La Vega SW) and will be hosted by Bianca Encinias of the Southwest Network for Environmental Justice. The film focuses on the historic Chicano movement here in New Mexico and was a recent winner of a New Visions / New Mexico Contract Award from the state.

Casting a Wide Net

On Location Casting is looking for extras on three major projects being shot in New Mexico. These are paid gigs. Background talent will get $9 an hour in Albuquerque and $9.50 an hour in Santa Fe. Filming days and times vary, but will usually be 10 to 12 hours, Monday through Friday. Here’s what they’re looking for: “In Plain Sight,” the detective show with Mary McCormack, needs “pregnant women, lawyers, nurses, paramedics, upscale professionals, military men and women” from now until mid-June. Odd Thomas, a horror thriller starring Anton Yelchin, is seeking “hot sexy girls and guys ages 18-24, bowlers, mall employees, rock musicians, waiters and waitresses, photographers, upscale reporter types and law enforcement” from May 18 through the end of July. As Cool As I Am, a coming-of-age indie staring Claire Danes, is seeking “high school-looking 18-21-year-olds, grocery cashiers, parents and kids, cheerleaders and office workers” from May 9 through mid-June. To be considered, you need to visit the On Location Casting website and complete a free talent application.

Bernalillo County in conjunction with the Aldo Leopold Foundation is hosting an environmental film competition. Highlight an environmental hero through video and you could win a cash prize. This countywide contest encourages amateur and professional videographers to tell a story describing the contributions a specific person has made to our community and environment. There are two categories for kids (14 and younger, or teens 15 to 18), both of which are five minutes and under in length. Adults are encouraged to submit in one of two categories (five minutes and under, or six to 20 minutes). The first prize winner in each category will receive a $200 cash prize, and the film will be screened during an award ceremony outdoors at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House on May 20. Deadline for submission is May 13 at 5 p.m.
