As if Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, world cinema classics and movie musical film series (all of which are currently underway) weren’t enough, the KiMo Theatre is expanding its weekly movie selections with a documentary film series on Wednesday nights. On Wednesday, July 10, the KiMo will be showing the film Under The Boardwalk: The MONOPOLY Story starting at 7 p.m. This fun documentary traces the history—from the 1930s to today—of the world’s most popular boardgame. Tickets are $7 general admission, $5 students and seniors. For more details, go to kimotickets.com.
Browncoats For Charity
Can’t Stop the Serenity is a worldwide annual charity screening and party organized by fans of Joss Whedon’s cult sci-fi series “Firefly.” The screenings, fully sanctioned by Whedon himself, raise funds and awareness for Equality Now. That organization works for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. This year’s Albuquerque event will take place at the KiMo Theatre on Friday, July 5, from 6 to 10 p.m. For the fifth year in a row, Albuquerque Browncoats will be hosting the event. Tickets are $10 and are available now at kimotickets.com. Part of the proceeds will also go toward UNM Children’s Hospital. For more info, go to cantstoptheserenity.com.
Dirty Girls Get Real
Former Albuquerque Tribune reporter Alisa Valdes hit the big time with her chick-lit novel The Dirty Girls Social Club. Now the author is turning producer, hoping to shoot a feature film version of The Dirty Girls Social Club right here in New Mexico. On Tuesday, July 9, the writer-producer will hold a special fundraising, publicity building event at Nob Hill Bar and Grill (3128 Central SE) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Show up and you’ll get to meet several members of the cast and crew, including Steven Michael Quezada (from “Breaking Bad”). For more info on the film itself, check out veefilms.com.
Speaking of “Breaking Bad,” the final half of the final season of the Albuquerque-lensed series is rapidly approaching. Although we have yet to hear of any officially sanctioned local parties in the making, the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York and AMC are partnering to present a week-long celebration of the Emmy-winning drama’s final eight episodes. “Long Cook: A Breaking Bad Marathon” will take place July 26-30 in the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center Amphitheater. This five-day marathon will include all episodes from previous seasons. On Thursday, Aug. 1, and Friday, Aug. 2, the series caps off with “The Perfect Batch: Breaking Bad Cast Favorites”—in which series creator Vince Gilligan gets together with stars Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn, Betsy Brandt, RJ Mitte and Bob Odenkirk to present their favorite episodes and participate in Q&A sessions at the Walter Reade Theatre. If you can’t make it to New York, the conversation portion of the evenings will be live-streamed through filmlinc.com. Afterward, fans can find the panel videos in their entirety on amc.com.
