24 Hour Comics Day
Well, here I am at Harwood Art Center, participating in my very first 24 Hour Comics Day. The whistle has blown (figuratively) and I'm surrounded by about 35 people who all have 24 hours in which to write, draw and edit a complete 24-page comic book. The fine folks at local indie comics imprint 7000 B.C. are sponsoring the local chapter of the international affair. ... Now I just have to figure out what my comic book is going to be. Wish me luck. I'll check back later when I'm burned-out and sleep deprived. --Devin

Eight hours in and it's time for a brief dinner break. Scarf some pizza and back to work. Eight whole hours and I've penciled four pages worth of funny animal comic. This seems problematic. We'll see when 12 hours closes in. --Devin- editorial

It's midnight. The pace is slowing a bit around here. The room is a quieter riot of competing MP3 players. Some of the younger participants have left for the night. I'm about 8 pages in. I should have a dozen finished at this point. Oh well. Not convinced my stamina is up for this yet. It's harder than I expected. Waiting for my second wind. We'll see. --Devin- editorial

Broke through the exhaustion. Six in the a.m. Things are cruising along now. I'm just over halfway done with the pencilling, which doesn't sound all that great, but I'm semi-confident I'll get all 24 pages laid out. Inking might go fast. Or not. Only about 15 diehards left. Some comics are very close to done. I'm impressed with the skills around here. Everyone is doing some very cool work. Can't wait to see some finished work. --Devin- editorial

Time's up. A hell of a lot of people turned in their comics. I have created what is termed a "noble failure." After 24 hours hunched over a drawing board, I managed to churn out just 17 pencilled pages. I quite like what I've got, my story is chugging along nicely, I'm getting a few laughs out of it (and not just from myself), and I'm curious to see where it goes. But I'll have to finish it outside of 24 Hour Comics Day. All in all, I feel pretty energized. And now ... to bed. --Devin- DarcyBennet

Well, I'm hoping to actually finish the piece now that I've got the luxury of time. Twenty-four hours seems like a lot until you actually sit down and start doing the thing. I'll post some of it soon. My book was basically the story of "Bob" a grumpy, chain-smoking rabbit who worked as an accountant and lived on an island full of unflappably cheerful talking animals. I was inspired by eternally grinning Japanese icons like Hello Kitty and cute sim games like Animal Crossing. Surprisingly, I consumed no caffeine, energy drinks or stimulants. I wanted to do this "au natural." I was a little loopy around 3 a.m. but soldiered through just fine. --Devin
