Gay For (No) Pay– Organizers are gearing up for the 2006 Southwest Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, taking place right here in Albuquerque on Sept. 29-Oct. 5. In addition to accepting film submissions for this year’s fourth annual cinema soiree (check www.closetcinema.org for info on that), the SWGLFF is looking for volunteers to help put the event together. Are you a graphic designer? Do you have experience in fundraising? Or marketing? Are you just a film fanatic who wants to get his or her hands dirty? Movies in the Mountains– Summer heat got you down? Why not head to the movies … in the cool environs of Taos, NM? The Taos Center for the Arts (133 Paseo del Pueblo Norte) is hosting a summer movie series featuring some possibly overlooked indie gems. If you’re in the mood for a road trip up into the mountains of northern New Mexico this summer, it might be worth your time to check ’em out. On Sun., July 23 (2 p.m.), and Mon./Tues., July 24/25 (7 p.m.), it’s the British comedy Kinky Boots . On Sun., July 30 (2 p.m.), and Mon./Tues., July 31/Aug. 1, it’s the minimalist Mexican slacker comedy Temporada de Patos (Duck Season) . On Sun. Aug. 6 (2 p.m.) and Mon./Tues., Aug. 7/8 (7 p.m.), it’s the high school-set film noir Brick . On Sun., Aug 12 (2 p.m.), and Mon./Tues., Aug. 14/15 (7 p.m.), it’s the film version of Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion . Cinematic Environment– The Rio Fest International Environmental Film Festival is seeking submissions for its inaugural event Jan. 19-21, 2007, in Socorro, NM. Organizers are seeking films focused on environmental themes in all forms of film or video–from documentary and narrative to animation and experimental. Shorts that are “humorous, inspirational, exciting, progressive, and thought provoking” are needed for possible screening. Deadline for entry is Sept. 20, 2006.
