A couple weeks ago, we ran a guide to Albuquerque theater that left out several of the best and brightest movers and shakers on our local scene. You can place the blame for these omissions entirely on the bowed shoulders of Alibi Arts Editor Steven Robert Allen. If you already made a complaint and are still not in either theater guide, send those complaints to Steve as well.What follows are brief descriptions of several venues and companies who play starring roles in Albuquerque’s thriving theater scene. Get out and support local theater. It’ll do ya good.
N4 Th Theatre
Placing a special emphasis on presenting global theater, North Fourth is one of Albuquerque’s newest performance venues. It’s operated by VSA Arts of New Mexico, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing creative learning and employment opportunities for people with disabilities or limited access to the arts. Catch Unveil: Modern Dance Comes Out of the Closet , a performance by the Blythe Eden Dance Company, opening this weekend.
National Hispanic Cultural Center
Benefiting from what might well be the most advanced performance complex in the state, the National Hispanic Cultural Center presents some of the finest touring productions that come through town as well as shows staged by local theater troupes and performers. Teatro Nuevo Mexico’s The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit runs through Sept. 2.
Out Ch’yonda
Out ch’Yonda focuses on presenting the best plays from the early 20 th century through the present by playwrights of color. It’s also evolved into a full-fledged art center in the heart of Barelas. Out ch’Yonda has staged many well-received productions, such as Owen Vincent Dodson’s The Shining Town and Aishah Rahman’s Unfinished Women Cry in No Man’s Land While a Bird Dies in a Guilded Cage .
Teatro Nuevo Mexico
Teatro Nuevo Mexico is an all-Latino, Albuquerque-based troupe, founded in 2003. Next week, they will open James Lujan’s Kino and Teresa , a play revolving around the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, at N4 th Theatre.
Theatre-In-The-Making
Theatre-in-the-Making has been around for more than 17 years under the direction of Paul Ford. The group is dedicated to the idea that lives of individuals and communities can change through the power of creative and joyful artistry. Theatre-in-the-Making gives students and performers of all ages opportunities to experience the magic of the stage.
Working Classroom
Working Classroom brings a diverse community of student and professional artists, actors and writers together to create a vibrant creative community. The students of Working Classroom are made up of talented young artists and actors from historically ignored communities who work with mentors to create art for and about our diverse communities.
