Read and Converse— The Lannan Foundation’s annual Readings and Conversations series gets cooking this week with a heated dialog between legendary muckrakers Seymour Hersh and Amy Goodman. Ever since he uncovered the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam in the late ’60s, Hersh has been pumping out some of the finest in-depth investigative pieces to be found anywhere. Due in part to his network of sources within the power structure of our federal government, he’s been able to write some of the most informative (not to mention terrifying) investigative articles about our war in Iraq.Goodman is the host of the muckraking left-wing public radio show “Democracy Now!” She’s promoting a new book called Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back. I’m sure these two will have plenty to talk about. (Goodman will also be in Albuquerque on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. to deliver a presentation at the UNM Student Union Building Ballroom). The Lannan event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.Lannan has an amazing lineup for the 2006-2007 season. In the coming months, there’ll be readings with everyone from legendary poets like Mary Oliver and Patricia Smith to celebrity novelists like Denis Johnson, Dave Eggers and Gore Vidal. No one supports literary culture in our part of the world with more verve than Lannan, so I encourage you to check out the season’s roster at www.lannan.com.All events in the series will take place at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe (211 W. San Francisco). Tickets are $6 general, $3 students/seniors and can be ordered by calling (505) 988-1234. If they sell out, each installment will be aired on KUNM 89.9 FM on the Saturday following the event and also on KSFR 90.7 FM at 2 p.m. on the Sunday after each event. In addition, the archive section of the Lannan website will include permanent streaming audio files posted within a week of every event.
