Al Gore Meet Our God– Religious leaders in Albuquerque are joining forces with people of faith in over 4,000 congregations across the country to bring attention to the threat of global warming. This follows a growing national trend in which nondenominational, nonpartisan ministries work together to counter certain fundamentalist beliefs that the Earth is a no-deposit, no-return prospect that might as well be denuded of resources and trashed just prior to Armageddon. Check out raptureready.com or apocalypsesoon.org.)The New Mexico chapter of Interfaith Power and Light has organized more than 20 local churches and congregations and some 45 statewide to participate in IPL’s “Spotlight on Global Warming.” The spotlight will include free screenings of the recent documentary An Inconvenient Truth , followed by various discussion/action sessions. “Global warming is a threat to God’s creation,” says Sister Joan Brown, a Franciscan who works in Ecology Ministry and is a member of the steering committe of NM IPL. “Our goal is to educate and engage our congregations to take a personal and collective action to reduce global warming emissions.”“Spotlight on Global Warming” will take place in Albuquerque on Oct. 1 (Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Canossian Daughters of Charity, San Isidro Parish), Oct. 2 (Cathedral of St. John), Oct. 3 (St. Thomas of Canterbury, Church of the Good Shepherd), Oct. 4 (City on the Hill, Albuquerque Mennonite Church, St. Michael and All Angels, St. Andrew Presbyterian, First Unitarian Church), Oct. 5 (John the Twenty-Third Catholic Community, First Congregational Church, Trinity Catholic Worker), Oct. 6 (Albuquerque Friends Meeting) and Oct. 7 (Las Placitas Presbyterian Church). Free Midnights– The Alibi ’s Midnight Movie Madness at the Guild Cinema has joined forces with this year’s Southwest Gay & Lesbian Film Festival to present two over-the-top midnight movie screenings. On Friday, Sept. 29, will be the blackly comic vampire flick Scab (11:30 p.m.). On Saturday, Sept. 30, will be the camp-tacular sci-fi musical The Apple (midnight). Saturday night’s screening will feature a costume contest presided over by ABQ drag queens extraordinaire The Dolls. Best disco-era attire wins big prizes, so dress to excess!
