Cinematic Conference- -On Dec. 1 and 2 at the Hotel Santa Fe (1501 Paseo de Peralta), the New Mexico State Film Office will host its first annual NM Filmmakers Conference. This two-day event will feature networking opportunities plus practical seminars and workshops designed to help local filmmakers sharpen their craft. Seminars and workshops are free, but space is limited, so pre-registration is required. A full schedule of events is posted online at www.nmfilm.com. Registration began online on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

This conference is a great opportunity to bolster truly independent film production in our state. The success of the conference, of course, is entirely dependent upon the people who choose to attend. I encourage as many filmmakers as possible to get involved. This gives you a chance to learn new skills and (perhaps most importantly) hook up with other like-minded filmmakers.

There are several tracks within the conference. The Screen Actors Guild, for example, will host a seminar in which professional actors will read from select scripts. If you are a screenwriter and/or director and would like to have your script considered, e-mail your résumé and contact information along with your best dialogue-driven scene (no more than five pages) to nm.filmmakers@nmfilm.com no later than Wednesday, Nov. 6. Tom Schuch, president of the New Mexico branch of the Screen Actors Guild, and a selection committee will choose submitted scenes to be performed live at the conference.

There will also be a special two-hour networking event hosted by the New Mexico Music Commission. For musicians who would like to meet and have their work heard by local filmmakers. The conference will provide tables. You bring your own gear (CD player or laptop), headphones and promotional material. Space is limited. You must be a New Mexico resident to apply. Send résumé, contact information and a CD/DVD to: “New Mexico Film Commission, P.O. Box 1450, Santa Fe, N.M. 87504.” Deadline to apply is Friday, Nov. 3. For more information, visit www.newmexicomusic.org.

For more information on the Filmmakers Conference, log on to www.nmfilm.com or call the State Film Office at (505) 827-9810.
