N.M. Book Award— The New Mexico Book Co-op is unveiling a new book award to draw attention to the best books connected to our literary state. Judged by a panel of scholars and librarians, the contest is open to any author or publisher, as long as the book submitted has some tangible connection to New Mexico or the Southwest. Entries must have been published from 2005 through the present. Deadline is July 1, 2007, with a discount for entries submitted by April 15. More Poetry, More Beer— ABQSlams brings yet another poetry superstar to Albuquerque when Austin poet Phil West steps to the stage of the District (115 Fourth Street NW) this weekend. West is the author of the well-received collection The Arsenal of Small Stars (Wordsmith Press). He’ll be in town Saturday, Jan. 6, for a show hosted by Danny Solis. Admission is free. Performance starts at 6 p.m. Poetry fans shouldn’t even consider missing this one.

One Night Stand— It’s been a couple years since the Cell Theatre (700 First Street NW) stopped hosting its monthly cabaret show, A Little Nightcap . Still, it had a very successful run, and the Cell crew is eager to bring it back. It’s got a new name— One Night Stand —and a new schedule—it’s now bi-monthly—but otherwise it should provide many of the same chills, thrills and spills as its predecessor. We’re talking music, comedy, film, burlesque, theater, poetry, dance and, yes … puppets. The theme of the inaugural show on Friday, Jan. 5, is New Year’s resolutions. Tickets are $10.
