Catch the “Fire”– The ABC Family Channel series “Wildfire,” which shoots right here in Albuquerque, is looking for new faces to act as background extras in the upcoming season. If you’re interested, there will be an open casting call on Thursday, Jan. 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel at University and Menaul. The family-oriented soap, about a rebellious girl who finds excitement and romance at a horse ranch where she works as part of her parole from juvenile hall, is currently in its third season.

Projecting Babies– On Saturday, Jan. 27, there will be a special world premiere screening of the music-fueled documentary Project Babies, the “real story about life in L.A.’s most notorious ghetto, the Nickerson Gardens housing projects.” The screening will take place at 2 p.m. at the Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. A suggested $7 donation gets you in the door, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Directing/producing team Lawrence “Bus” Willis and Frank “House” Willis will be on hand for the screening, as will co-executive producer Matthew Z. Zomick. Some of the “Babies” featured in the film will be performing as emcees at an after party at The Library Bar and Grill. Rap group OFTB will also be there showing off mad skills. Project Babies is the work of a new nonprofit organization helping to improve the lives of inner-city kids around the world. Proceeds from the film, soundtrack and clothing sales will go toward helping local communities improve sex education, gang resistance and more.

How Long Must We Sing This Song?– On Jan. 30, 1972, soldiers from the British Army’s 1 st Parachute Regiment opened fire on unarmed and peaceful civilian demonstrators in Derry, Ireland, killing 13 and wounding a number of others. The march was intended to call attention to the British government’s official policy of internment without trial, introduced in August of 1971. The British government-appointed Widgery Tribunal eventually found the soldiers involved in the mass shooting not guilty. Why the history lesson? Because this coming Tuesday, Jan. 30, will be the 35 th anniversary of the date that became known as Bloody Sunday. (Yes, both John Lennon and U2 immortalized it in song.) To mark the day, Albuquerque’s Irish Freedom Committee will host three screenings of Paul Greengrass’ award-winning 2002 dramatization Bloody Sunday at the Guild Cinema. Showtimes will be 4:30, 6:45 and 9:15 p.m. There will be a short Q&A following the 6:45 showing.
