Screen It In Spanish– On Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m., The National Hispanic Cultural Center will present the classic 1950 film El Capitán Veneno. The film tells the story of an embittered army captain who gets injured during one of the uprisings against Queen Isabel and becomes a guest of the generous Countess of Santurce. The film will be shown in the NHCC’s Bank of America Theater and is in Spanish with English subtitles. This screening is free and open to the public.

Don’t Watch– After the success of last month’s “Don’t Watch This” performance, the Eat, Drink and Be Larry sketch comedy troupe is back with another side-splitting performance. On Friday, March 17, the group will take over the Orpheum Arts space (500 Second Street SW) beginning at 9 p.m. Rusty “The Chick Magnet” Rutherford will be hosting the show with his original off-the-wall antics, and the show will be rated “R,” so get a babysitter. “Don’t Watch This Live 6” will also feature hilarious films from Albuquerque filmmakers as well as special guest comedy sets from local comics. This one-night-only event will be filmed and broadcast on Public Access Channel 27 on Tuesdays at 11 p.m. as part of Rutherford’s “Don’t Watch This Live” show. Tickets are $6 at the door.

Hit the Road , Jack– Monday, March 19, at 7 p.m., the Santa Fe Film Center (1616 St. Michael’s Drive) will present a special screening of Road Scholar , Andrei Codrescu’s acclaimed 1991 documentary about the American soulscape. This one-night-only screening will be presented as part of the Lisa Law Film Festival. Law produced the film’s New Mexico-set segments, featuring hippies, crystal healers and alien abductees. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for 21-and-under. All proceeds will benefit Warehouse 21.

Gov Gets Real– The 2007 New Mexico Governor’s Cup film competition is about to get underway. This year, Gov. Richardson and the State Film Office are on the hunt for documentarians. Filmmakers around the state are encouraged to submit a treatment for a short (less than 30 minutes) nonfiction topic. Three winners will have the opportunity to see their documentary idea come to life with assistance from union members and trainees from the Governor’s Film Technicians Training Program–not to mention the $5,000 in production costs. Two winners will be selected in the general nonfiction category, and one winner will be selected in the special National Geographic All Roads “Indigenous or Minority Culture” category.
