A Gay Ol’ Time— For a quarter century, the New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus has been singing like angels for appreciative audiences in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and beyond. Founded in 1981 as the Brash Ensemble, the group has gone through plenty of changes over the years, but one thing has always remained consistent: the high quality of the music. This weekend, the chorus, along with its little sister group, the New Mexico Women’s Chorus, will present a pair of performances at two different Albuquerque churches, focusing on popular songs from the ’30s and ’40s. On Saturday, May 19, they’ll perform at Immanuel Presbyterian Church (114 Carlisle SE). On Sunday, May 20, at 4 p.m., they’ll be at First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque (3701 Carlisle NE).Tickets cost $15 at the door and $12 in advance, available at Larry’s Hats (3102 Central SE) and Redwing Shoes (3401 Central NE). Youth Poets Society— It’s a good time to be young and poetic here in Albuquerque. A massive middle school poetry slam was held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center last month, in which young poets from 19 teams around the state competed, verse to verse, for the championship. This month, a less competitive youth-oriented poetry event kicks off at the Main Library (501 Copper NW), where the Youth Poetry Society will meet on Saturday, May 19. The idea is to provide a supportive place for aspiring poets to hone their craft. Poets 14 and under will meet from noon to 1 p.m. Poets 15 to 20 will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. Arrive early for sign-ups if you want to read. From that point on the Youth Poetry Society plans to meet every third Saturday of the month (June 16, July 21, Aug. 18, etc.). 768-5141.
