NM Overdose— This weekend is your chance to check out dozens of films shot by fellow New Mexicans. The third annual New Mexico Filmmakers week is sponsored by the New Mexico Film Office and takes place Thursday through Sunday at the Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. Not only can you catch four days worth of cinematic goodness, but all the screenings are 100 percent free.

Things start off on Thursday night with a “Meet the Filmmakers” gathering at Laru (3413 Central NE) from 5 to 7 p.m. After shaking hands and snacking on fine Cuban treats, you can pop a few doors down to the Guild and start watching films from Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, Tesuque, Cedar Crest, Las Cruces and more. At 7 p.m., the first batch of films out of the gate is a collection of shorts running the gamut from an animated piece by a freshman at Bosque School to a documentary about the Siberian surf-punk band The Red Elvises. At 8:40 p.m., it’s
Ausangate , a feature documentary about the indigenous Quechuas people who reside on the highest mountain peak in Peru.

Screenings pick up again at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Films are organized in blocks of approximately two hours each. Having seen the lineup, I must say this is an impressive year, with a whopping 11 features and dozens of shorts. A full list of films and times can be found by visiting www.nmfilm.com. What are you waiting for, New Mexicans? Get watching!
