The People Before Profit film/lecture series rolls into the Albuquerque Peace and Justice Center on Thursday, Sept. 20, with a free screening of Who Killed the Electric Car? This eye-opening documentary plays out like a carefully scripted conspiracy thriller, exploring why the once-promising electric car has gone the way of the dodo. (Like an Agatha Christie novel, there are no shortage of suspects.) Guest speaker Marcus Page will be on hand, talking about converting cars to biodiesel. Donations, of course, are welcome. The Peace and Justice Center is located at 202 Harvard SE.
This weekend, Sept. 21-23, the southern New Mexico town of Silver City will play host to the Second Annual Silver City Short Film Festival. In addition to screenings of the submitted films and an awards ceremony Saturday night, there will be presentations and talks by some of the “top guns” (their words, not mine) in New Mexico’s film industry. Featured speakers include filmmaker Frank Zúñiga, Santa Fe Screenwriting Conference founder Larry Stouffer and director Richard T. Stevens. Screenings will take place at the Fine Arts Center Theatre on the campus of Western New Mexico University. For more info, check out the festival’s website at www.silvercityfilmfest.com.
National CineMedia and FUNimation Entertainment continue their cinematic “Anime Bento” series next week with a personal fave, Hayao Miyazaki’s 1979 comic caper Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro . Debuting in 200 select AMC, Regal Entertainment Group and Georgia Theatre Company movie theaters nationwide, “Anime Bento, 4 Nights, 4 Servings” is serving up four feature-length Japanese animated titles on four separate nights in September. Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles and Full Metal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa premiered last week. On Wednesday, Sept. 26, starting at 7:30 p.m., The Castle of Cagliostro will screen in Albuquerque at the Cottonwood Starport Theater. A rare episode of the supernatural series “Tactics” will be shown as a bonus that night as well. The animated action fantasy Karas: The Prophecy follows on Thursday, Sept. 27. Tickets for all “Anime Bento” screenings can be purchased for $10 each at www.fathomevents.com or at the Starport box office.
