The season of love is upon us, which means the Alibi’s fifth annual Valentine’s Day Card Contest is here. All you creative-minded people yearning for the opportunity to pour your heart into a Valentine’s Day card and have it read by all of the Duke City, well, here it is! Glue, paste, draw, dribble, paint, shellac or silk-screen your way into our judges’ hearts on a surface no larger than 8.5 x 11 inches. Whichever cards make the judges swoon will be published in the Feb. 7 issue of the Alibi and their creators will receive super-sexy date packages (including dinner, a movie, chocolate and more). All entries must be received by 5 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 25, and only one entry per person will be accepted. Cupid commands you.
Ace Of Art
Last week, Art Director Tom Nayder called me into his office via the intercom in an ominous manner—often a sign of dissatisfaction. When I arrived at his desk, he pointed at a large poster of a red, electric hair trimmer. "Have you heard about this?" he asked. No, I hadn’t. The poster was for the Ace Barber Shop‘s third anniversary art show—"January 2008 Burque." Tom said the show is open for any artist to display his or her work, but didn’t know much else. My guess is the show is still open through the end of the month, and judging from past events it should include some high-quality work by underground artists. Give it a look if you’re in the area at 109 Fourth Street SW.
Wordsmiths, Unite!
The New Mexico Book Co-op is hosting its next meeting this Friday, Jan. 25. The Co-op is an organization of local authors and publishers dedicated to bettering the New Mexico literary community. This month’s meeting, held at 11:30 a.m. at Home Town Buffet (9261 Coors NW), will feature a talk by Ruthie Francis, Paul Rhetts and Barbe Awalt about what they learned from hosting the first-ever New Mexico Book Awards.
